Houston (April 23, 2019) – The Texas Women’s Empowerment Foundation (TWEF) is proud to present a free community event, Beats & Beets Garden Party on Saturday, April 27, 2019, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the TWEF Urban Garden.

In 2015, TWEF developed The Urban Garden in an effort to help communities near TWEF’s Empowerment Center that are within a USDA’s designated “food desert” and provide fresh produce to residents who otherwise have to drive more than four miles round trip to the closest grocery store. The Urban Garden provides produce for local farmer’s market, a cross-cultural connections within the food desert with access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and weekly physical activities. The program promotes positive behavioral changes that include better nutrition and increases physical activity among participants while teaching entrepreneurial skills to the youth through the farmers’ market.

The Beats & Beets event is a lively garden party in the city featuring gardening demos, Spring planting, STEM education, networking,  pop-up shops, and music from a live DJ. The green-thumb gardening event will also feature food samples from Yoyo’s Hot Dog, Soulfitgrill, and Bee Fit Food along with hydration from Topo Chico. A master gardener will be on site answering gardening and agriculture questions.

Sponsors include State Farm, Southwest Airlines, and Comerica. Gina Wilken, State Farm Public Affairs Specialist said: “State Farm is proud to once again partner with TWEF and their Urban Garden. The work done with children and the community in the garden is beyond honorable and we look forward to all of the upcoming opportunities to work together for the betterment of the Houston community.”
